Can Essential Oils Be Used for Cleaning?
The short answer is yes! Essential oils are powerful plant extracts that can be used for a variety of purposes, including cleaning. In fact, many commercially-available cleaners contain essential oils as their active ingredients.
However, you can also use essential oils to make your own DIY cleaners. Not only is this more economical, but it also allows you to customize the scent and strength of your cleaner according to your preferences. So, if you're looking for a natural and effective way to clean your home, consider using essential oils!
What Essential Oils are Good for Cleaning?
When it comes to essential oils and cleaning, there are a few different oils that stand out. Lemon, orange, pine, and lavender essential oils are all great for cleaning. They have a strong scent that can help to disinfect and clean surfaces.
Another essential oil that is good for cleaning is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and has been shown to be effective against a variety of germs, including MRSA. It can be used full strength on surfaces or diluted in water.
Essential Oils for Cleaning
If you are looking for an essential oil to use in your bathroom, any of these would be a good choice for cleaning your home:

Wintergreen Essential Oil for Cleaner
Wintergreen has a fresh and minty aroma that is reminiscent of chewing gum and toothpaste. Wintergreen leaves are put through steam distillation to extract the essential oil. Here is a little more about wintergreen oil:
- Minty aroma that is strong and deodorizing
- Menthyl salicylate is the principal constituent of wintergreen
- Exceptionally powerful, when used topically, use only in small amounts and for a short duration
- This oil can be toxic if overused, or mishandled - keep it locked away from children
- Frequently used for sore, aching joints and muscles
- Avoid using this oil on kids under 12, or if pregnant or breastfeeding
DIY Fizzing Toilet Powder Recipe
I used wintergreen in the recipe I made in the picture but you can use the essential oil of your choice. Lemon oil is great for cleaning.
- 1 cup Baking soda
- 1/4 cup Citric acid
- 20 drops Essential oil of choice
- Storage container
Directions:
In a bowl add baking soda and essential oil drops. Blend together thoroughly using a fork. Once blended, add in citric acid and blend into the mix. Store toilet cleaning powder to a storage container, be sure to label the container.
Citric acid reacts to water so don't get powder mixture wet until you are ready for the fizzing action to occur. When making this recipe, blending the baking soda and essential oils together first, the baking soda seems to absorb the oil enough so the citric acid doesn't react with added.
To Use:
Add 1 tablespoon of powder to your toilet. Let sit in the toilet for 15-20 minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush. Repeat as needed. Be sure to store the powder away from children and pets.
