BONUS: Essential Oils for Horses

I found this use sent in by reader Tina C. very intriguing. I have always loved horses and have fond memories of riding horses when I was younger. As a child I dreamed about owning one (a monkey too)!

"I use oils on my horses, they are "revved" up in springtime, sometimes overdoing it (sore muscles, scrapes/scratches) and flies are biting already here in Illinois. So tea tree, birch bark and Helichrysum (diluted) for wound care and sore muscles are on hand this time of year." -Tina C.

She was also kind enough to share her DIY recipes with us that she uses on her horses. Here is how she uses essential oils with her horse:

BEST USE - TICK REMOVAL:

If you see a tick, put peppermint oil (not diluted) directly on and the tick will back right out, then you can remove safely.

CLEAN SCRAPES:

We use tea tree oil to cleanse scrapes and bites (almost daily) and have added recipe for fly spray and a poultice.

POULTICE RECIPE:

  • Bentonite clay
  • 1/4 cup witch hazel
  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 15-20 drops Lavender
  • 15-20 drops Melrose Blend (Tea Tree, Rosemary & Clove)

In an 8 oz mason jar, mix ingredients until a "mud-like" consistency. Keep tightly closed for storage, can be used on people and horses for bug bites, sprains, swelling, cuts and scrapes!
