How to Make a Cooling Compress with Lavender Oil

Take the heat and sting out of a sunburn with an anti-inflammatory lavender cooling compress. Applying an ice-cold compress with healing oils after sun exposure can bring relief.

Cooling compresses also work well for bruises, insect stings and bites, headaches, swelling, and other injuries. Plus, research suggests that lavender oil may help improve sleep quality, reduce anxiety, and provide relief from pain.

    Ingredients for Lavender Oil Compress

    • 6 drops Lavender Oil
    • 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
    • Washcloth or towel
    • Bowl with cold water
    • Ice Cubes

How to Make Essential Oil Compress

Step 1: Fill the bowl with cold water and ice cubes.

Step 2: Blend 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil and 6 drops lavender essential oil together. Add oil blend to the bowl of water and ice.

Step 3: Soak the washcloth in the bowl to make a cooling compress. Remove the washcloth and squeeze out the excess water.

Step 4: Place compress on the sunburned area. Leave in place until it reaches body temperature.

Repeat step #3 & #4 a few times as needed.

You may want to use peppermint oil in the sunburn compress for the cool menthol affect. It is best to only use 3 drops of oil as it is a stronger essential oil. You can also use fractionated coconut oil as an alternative carrier oil.

When complete, follow up by applying aloe vera gel to the burned skin. Aloe vera gel is soothing and healing to sunburns, plus it keeps the skin moist.

I like to keep my aloe vera gel in the refrigerator, it improves the shelf life and it is also really refreshing when applied to sun-exposed skin. You may want to try Aloe Vera Gel Ice Cubes too.

Essential Oil Combinations for Sunburn Relief

Sunburns can be painful and uncomfortable, but essential oils can help provide some relief. So, why not incorporate essential oils in your sunburn blend? You'll be glad you did.

    1. Lavender and Chamomile for Soothing and Healing

Lavender and chamomile are a match made in heaven - and not just for sunburn relief. Their calming aroma and invigorating properties make them the perfect combination for soothing sunburned skin. The sweet, herbaceous scent of Roman or German Chamomile oil is also a great way to relax after a day in the sun.

To get started, create a diluted blend of lavender and chamomile essential oils. Start with a few drops of each in an ounce of carrier oil, such as jojoba or almond oil, and then apply it topically to the affected area.

The blend of these two oils will provide both an immediate and long-term effect on sunburns, helping to reduce redness, itching, and pain. This oil blend can help soothe the skin and provide calming properties.

    2. Lavender and Peppermint for Cooling Relief

Peppermint oil is a great addition to a lavender essential oil blend for sunburn. It's known for its cooling properties and can help give you some soothing relief from the hot, uncomfortable sunburn.

Plus, the pleasant scent of lavender and peppermint can help relax and calm you. Just add a few drops of peppermint to a sunburn essential oil recipe and enjoy the cooling and calming effects.

    3. Frankincense Oil with Coconut Oil

For sunburn relief, try mixing frankincense oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or avocado oil. Then applying it to the affected area. Frankincense has been used for centuries for its healing properties, and can help to soothe and reduce inflammation.

Plus, it smells great! Just be sure to use a carrier oil to dilute the strength of the frankincense, so that it won't irritate your skin.

    4. Tea Tree and Lavender for Anti-inflammatory Effects

If you're looking for some added anti-inflammatory effects to your go-to sunburn relief routine, try combining tea tree and lavender essential oils. The two oils together provide a potent combination of antiseptic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory effects, making them great for soothing and calming sunburns.

Just mix a few drops of the two oils in a carrier oil, then apply lightly apply the mixture to the sunburned areas. The cooling effect and anti-inflammatory benefits will help reduce pain, redness, and swelling.

Final Thoughts on Essential Oils for Sunburn

In conclusion, essential oils are an effective and natural remedy for sunburn relief. They can be combined in different ways to create a soothing blend that can be applied directly to the skin.

Lavender oil, chamomile oil, and peppermint oil are some of the most popular essential oils used for treating sunburn, but there are many more that can help to reduce inflammation and provide relief from pain and itching.

With the right essential oil combination, you can find relief from your sunburn quickly and naturally.
