Have you ever received a gift that you really didn't want? I think most people can answer yes. You graciously thank the giver and then wonder what you are going to do with the item you received.

That's how I ended up with an electric wax melt warmer. The giver was being thoughtful, knowing that I love to have my home smell great but not realizing that I only use natural ingredients, like essential oils, to achieve this.

Store bought wax melts are frequently made with fragrances and perfumes that are rarely from natural sources.  Many times the base is paraffin wax, a by product of petroleum. Paraffin wax and paraffin candles can actually do more harm than good when it comes to air quality.

For the base of this recipe, we are using an ingredient safe for your health... beeswax! It is a clean burning wax that makes a great base for scented melts and wax tarts. To scent the wax melts, we use essential oils of course!

Best Essential Oils for Wax Melts

While there are many essential oils you can choose to use for scented melts, here are a few recommendations and why they are great choices.

Lavender Essential Oil

  • A favorite for all things oily! Lavender's gentle and versatile floral aroma really shines for emotional comfort.
  • It promotes balance, offers reassurance, and is calming to the mind and body.
  • Especially great for use before bedtime.

Peppermint Essential Oil

  • The potent and powerful minty aroma of peppermint is emotionally uplifting and energizing.
  • It also has the ability to sharpen your mind and focus.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

  • Offers a wonderful, woody aroma that is strengthening and relaxing.
  • I love how it promotes a peaceful sense of confidence.

Hemlock Essential Oil

  • This is not the poisonous plant that may come to mind, this is an unrelated conifer tree (Tsuga canadensis) that offers many health supporting properties.
  • It has a piney, fresh and woodsy aroma that is naturally cleansing and allows you to feel full of life.

Orange Essential Oil

  • The citrus aroma of orange is most impressive for offering a bright and cheery optimistic feeling.
  • It is relaxing, restoring and uplifting.

Lemon Essential Oil

  • Bright and sparkly comes to mind when thinking of lemon's aroma.
  • It offers a feelings of inspirations and energy.
  • Lemon plays well with other scents too... especially lime, tea tree, lavender, and peppermint.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil

  • The piney, fresh aroma of Juniper is sure to cleanse the air.
  • Emotionally, it supports overall energy, encouragement and vitality.

Patchouli Essential Oil

  • The rich and earthy aroma of patchouli is perfect for deep relaxation, meditation, and contemplation.
  • Frequently used in natural perfumes and deodorants, enjoyed for it's peaceful presence.

Electric Wax Warmers and Essential Oils

When it comes to getting essential oils into the air, diffusing essential oil is superior to an electric wax warmer. I personally prefer to use an aromatherapy diffuser when it comes to inhaling essential oils.

When essential oils are heated they can lose therapeutic value, making them less effective overall. Your home will smell good but you will not gain the full benefits that essential oils offer.

Wax warmers come in many shapes, sizes and form. Some require a candle and some are electric. I prefer a flameless electric wax warmer because they are easy to use and I do not have to worry about an open flame.

If you already have a wax warmer, bring new life to it with these essential oil wax melts.

Essential Oil Scented Wax Melts Recipe

Step 1: Melt beeswax in a homemade double boiler, using a glass measuring cup and a pot with about 2 inches of gently boiling water.

Step 2: Once beeswax is melted, add in fractionated coconut oil and stir with a glass stirring rod to combine the ingredients. Be sure it is fractionated coconut oil and not virgin coconut oil. Fractionated coconut oil is always in liquid form and is odorless.

Step 3: Remove from heat, use caution, glass will be hot! Then stir in essential oils of choice. You can use an essential oil blend or a single essential oil. I like lavender wax melts personally, but the options are endless. Not sure, try one of the essential oils listed above that fits most with the atmosphere you want to create.

Step 4: Pour into silicone mold. I made 5 melts with this silicone mold. I think it is a great size for scented melts.

I also use this mold for aloe vera sun soothers (plus you can use this molds for much more).

Wax Melts vs Essential Oil Diffuser

Wax melts and essential oil diffusers are both popular ways to enjoy scented materials in your home. But how do they work? And which one is right for you?

Wax Melts

Wax melts are small pieces of scented wax that are heated in order to release their fragrance. Wax melts can be used with a variety of different heat sources, including tealight candle warmers, wax burner, tart warmers, and electric wax warmers. Wax melts can also be called other names like wax tarts or scented wax cubes.

  • Once the wax melt has been heated, it will release its fragrance into the air for a period of time.
  • Wax melts are a great way to enjoy strong, consistent scent for a specific period of time.

Aromatherapy Diffuser

Essential oil diffusers work by sending essential oils in the air. Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that contain the aromatic compounds of plants. When diffused, these aromatic compounds can have a number of benefits, including reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and improving focus.

  • There are a variety of different diffuser types available, from ultrasonic diffusers to candle diffusers. Ultrasonic is the preferred type for many users, some enjoy nebulizing diffusers too.
  • Unlike scented wax melts, diffused essential oils will slowly dissipate into the air over time.

Which One is Better - Essential Oil Diffusers or Wax Melts?

Essential oil diffusers are the best if you're looking for something more subtle, or if you're interested in the potential benefits of aromatherapy. Wax melts may be chosen if you're looking for a strong, consistent scent experience in your home.

Ultimately, the best way to decide is to try out both and see which type of scent delivery system works better for you.

What is a therapeutic grade essential oil?

Therapeutic grade is simply a marketing term that any company can claim. No government agency or organization “grades” or “certifies” essential oils in the United States.
