Melt and Pour Soap Base For Essential Oils
Melt and Pour soap bases are especially great for beginners or those DIYers who are not committed to crafting cold-process soap.
To use melt-and-pour soap, you have to cut up the soap block, melt it down, add color and scent, and then pour it into your desired soap mold. It's that simple. Check out our full tutorial below.
I am using Goat's Milk melt and pour base in this recipe because it has hydrating and nourishing properties. You can also use a shea butter base or whatever melt-and-pour soap base you prefer.
Conifer Essential Oils For Soap Making
Conifers typically consist of evergreen trees that bear cones and needle-like leaves. Coniferous essential oils are steam-distilled from these trees, producing woodsy, piney, and earthy aromas. Oftentimes, it is reminiscent of a fresh forest or Christmas time.
I love the fresh forest aroma of conifer essential oils, especially pine and fir. With this essential oil massage soap recipe, use your choice of pine scent or substitute with a different essential oil.
In general, conifer oils are supportive to the lungs and airway passages. They can also be grounding, uplifting, and stimulating. I choose white fir (aka silver fir) for my soap bars. I really love the sharp pine aroma this oil has. It is so energizing and invigorating, especially great for a morning shower.
Here are some to choose from:
- Silver Fir (aka White Fir)
- Douglas Fir
- Balsam Fir
- Siberian Fir
- Scots Pine (aka Scotch pine)
- Hemlock
- Black Spruce
Homemade Essential Oil Massage Soap Recipe
Use this homemade essential oil massage soap to pamper yourself, which you can do in the comfort of your home. It has been created to give you a luxurious, aromatherapeutic experience.
Ingredients needed:
- 1 pound Goat's Milk melt and pour soap base
- 10 drops Blue Tansy Essential Oil (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Conifer essential oil of choice
- Glass measuring cup (size 4 cups)
- Silicone massage soap mold
- Spray bottle with Rubbing Alcohol
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Cut the soap block into small squares with a sharp knife. This helps it to melt quicker. Place the cut-up soap into the glass measuring cup.
Step 2: Place the measuring cup into a pot with several inches of boiling water. You do not want rapid boiling because that can cause water to splash into your soap base.
Step 3: Stir occasionally until the base completely melts (no solid chunks left). Takes 10-15 minutes. Once melted, remove from heat using a pot holder because the handle will be hot.
Step 4: Add in the essential oils and stir well. I used White Fir for my pine scent and Blue Tansy essential oil for the coloration of the soap, it adds a soft minty color. It also adds a unique aroma, but this oil can be omitted. Read more about Blue Tansy here.
Step 5: Pour soap into soap mold. I filled almost 4 of these molds with this recipe (one bar was just a little shorter).
Step 6: Immediately spray the exposed tops of soap with rubbing alcohol. This helps pop the bubbles so the soap is smooth on top (see the picture). You can get the molds I used here.
Step 7: Let cool until the soap hardens, usually about 2-3 hours. Pop soap bars out of silicone mold. The unused soap bars must be wrapped in plastic wrap for storage to avoid having them sweat (also called glycerin dew).
