What are Essential Oil Blends?
Essential oil blends are mixtures of essential oils that are combined for a specific therapeutic purpose. Blends can be composed of oils that are all from the same botanical family or from different families.
The oil blends can also be composed of essential oils that have similar therapeutic properties or that are complementary to one another.
How are Essential Oil Blends Made?
Essential oil blends are typically made by combining different essential oils. If you will be applying them topically, you will need a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, or grapeseed oil.
The blend can be applied to the skin or a bath. Unlike topical application of essential oils, if using combination blends aromatically, like adding to a diffuser for inhalation, no dilution is required.
How to Use the Combinations in Your Diffuser
Diffusing essential oils can be really easy and fun. Initially, it may be a little foreign but after a short time of diffusing, you will get the hang of it and become comfortable experimenting with oils and different scent combinations.
To use the combination in your diffuser, just grab the two oils listed for your desired use and place a few drops of each into your diffuser with the recommended water amount your tank requires...that's it! I told you this was simple.
How Many Drops of Essential Oils Should I Use in My Diffuser?
I try to keep the total drops for my diffuser between 5 to 10 drops. The number of drops really depends on several factors, here are some:
- Children or pets around, use less total drops
- Strong essential oil, use less drops of that oil in your (strong scented oils include patchouli, cinnamon bark, wintergreen, oregano, vetiver, ylang ylang, etc.)
- Large room, use more drops
- Want a strong aroma to fill the area, use more drops
- Want a gentle aroma, use fewer drops
- Smelly essential oil (like melaleuca/tea tree), use less drops of that oil in the blend
Remember this isn't an exact science and you really can't make a mistake. The worst that can happen is you do not like the combination, in that case, cross it off and continue on.
If it was too strong or not strong enough, just change the number of drops next time. I you come across a scent that you don't like but still want to use, try just one drop or two in the mixture (see Worst Smelling Essential Oils).
If you, or those around you, have any adverse reactions when diffusing, discontinue use and make note of what was in the blend. Sometimes expired oils or essential oils with additives can cause negative reactions.
