I have had many ask for a homemade version of an essential oil hand sanitizer with rubbing alcohol since supplies are very difficult to obtain at this point in time. While I usually would not use rubbing alcohol in my natural hand cleansers, the times are calling for this version. There are many DIY recipes available online but this is the recipe video I found and have made for my home and family so I am sharing with my readers here.

Just to be clear, HANDWASHING WITH SOAP AND WATER IS BEST and what the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

BUT if that is not an option because you are not near water or you are in your car, it is nice to at least have something available.

Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer Recipe with Rubbing Alcohol

This recipe from the video takes just three household ingredients plus your choice of essential oils. According to the CDC, the key to the proper amount of germ-killing alcohol must have at least 60 percent alcohol content in order to be effective. They also state:

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of microbes on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs. Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

Ingredients Needed:

There are two basic ingredients you'll need to make your own hand sanitizer, alcohol and aloe vera gel. The aloe vera gel will help to soothe and protect your hands from the drying effects of the alcohol. You'll also need a small funnel, a mixing bowl, and some empty bottles or jars for storage.

  • 2/3 cup isopropyl alcohol (60% or above)
  • 1/3 cup aloe vera gel
  • 1 teaspoon jojoba oil
  • 20 drops Thieves (or similar brand blend)
  • 20 drops Peppermint essential oil

Directions:

Add all ingredients to a bowl and whisk together to blend. Once blended together, add to spray bottles, squirt pumps, or containers of choice. This recipe makes a little over 1 cup (8 oz). To use, put a small amount of cleanser in the palm of one hand, then rub over all surfaces of both hands until it is dry.

How to Use Essential Oils for Hand Sanitizer

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that are packed with beneficial compounds. They can provide a wide range of health benefits when used properly.

When adding essential oils to your hand sanitizer, you'll want to use a ratio of about 6-10 drops of oil per 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of liquid. This will give you a nice, strong scent without being overwhelming.
