Coconut Oil for Lips
Coconut oil is the base of this DIY recipe because it has many health and wellness benefits. It will get your lips soft and revive, thanks to its nourishing and hydrating properties.
Here are some reasons to use coconut oil in lip balm:
- Coconut oil is safe to use on lips and easy to spread
- A rich source of Omega 3, 6, 9 as well as vitamins and minerals
- Has healing properties to soothe chapped lips
- Acts as an emollient, softens and moisturizes the skin and lips
- Works great as a lip gloss too because it leaves a nice shine
- Excellent treatment for dry lips and chapped skin
- Helps prevent premature aging
If you are allergic to coconuts you could try other carrier oils or butters like shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil, castor oil or jojoba oil instead as a substitute.
Other Lip Balm Ingredients
Beeswax is used to give the coconut oil (or carrier oil you choose) more solidity. Beeswax could be omitted from the recipe but your diy lip balm will be more likely to melt. At 76 degrees F, coconut oil will melt to a liquid and may make it a little more difficult to apply to lips.
For natural coloring of the lip balm pictured I used burts bees lip shimmer in apricot. You can use any favorite lipstick brand you prefer to tint your balm or omit this step completely. I think it adds a nice touch of color but you can keep it all natural, or opt for coloring with natural minerals or pigments.
Some even use beet root powder for a rosy color.
Essential Oils for Lip Balm
Essential oils are fragrant and fabulous in lip balm recipes because they can add in additional benefits, like softening lips. Use caution with phototoxic essential oils.
Essential oils have beneficial properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, and much more.
Here are some great essential oil blend options for the lip balm recipe:
Coconut Oil & Beeswax Lip Balm | Omit essential oils completely, only use beeswax and coconut oil |
Vegan Lip Balm | Omit beeswax completely, use only coconut oil and essential oils |
Healing Lip Balm | Use 6 drops of Lavender essential oil and 4 drops Frankincense essential oil |
Invigorating Peppermint Lip Balm | Use 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil (or Spearmint oil) |
Cleansing Lip Balm | Use 5 drops of Tea tree oil and 5 drops of Lemon oil |
Citrus Lip Balm | Use 10 drops of Tangerine (sweet orange would work too) |
Frankincense Lip Balm | Use 10 drops of Frankincense essential oil |
Lavender Lip Balm | Use 10 drops of Lavender essential oil |
