What is Melt and Pour Soap?

Melt and Pour Soap is a premade soap base that can be purchased, melted down, and formed into different shapes using soap molds. What is great about the melt-and-pour is that you can add essential oils to the base to easily make essential oil soap.

The most popular soap base for this is glycerin. It has been around for many years and was originally used as an alternative to cold-process or hot-process soaps. However, it is very common in the bath and body industry because it is very easy to make. Glycerin soaps also last longer than other types of soaps since they don't need curing time like some other recipes do.

Melt and pour soap can be made from different ingredients. For this fall project, I used honey melt and pour soap base because it already has a beautiful golden fall color without adding any colorants-keeping it simple!

I picked a cute fall leave and pumpkin mold here (mine came in a blue color, but this is the same listing I purchased from):

These soaps make cute homemade gifts and look very decorative in a guest bathroom. They're so nice that you may just want to look at them and smell them!

Recipe Directions

Step 1: Cut the melt-and-pour soap base up with a sharp knife. Place the pieces into a glass measuring cup. Place the measuring cup into a pan with about 2 inches of gently boiling water (see picture).

Step 2: Let the soap base melt completely. This will take about 10 minutes or more. Stir occasionally with a glass stirring rod or long metal spoon, be careful of the hot steam coming from the pot.

Step 3: Once completely melted, remove from heat. Allow to cool for about 2 minutes, then stir in essential oil drops.

Step 5: Pour the soap into the soap mold. For one pound, I made five full soap bars. It is best to have your soap mold on a solid surface. I like using a wooden serving tray so I can move it as needed without spilling the soap once poured.

Step 6: Spray the tops of soaps with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to get rid of the little bubbles on the soap surfaces. This is optional but must be done right after pouring soap. As you can see from the picture below, all the bubbles are gone.

Step 7: Allow the soaps to completely set at room temperature for about 4-5 hours. Once done, pop the soaps out of the mold.

Place soap in a soap dish or shower if ready to use. If not, wrap soaps separately in a layer of plastic wrap to avoid soap sweating (little dew drops on it).

Soap can also be melted in the microwave, but I prefer the stovetop. Cardamom essential oil can offer many health and wellness benefits. To obtain these benefits, ensure your oil is pure and high-quality without added fillers. Never mistake perfume oils or fragrance oils for essential oils.
