Looking for a beeswax free lip balm option? Here it is! Many lip balm recipes include beeswax to harden the balm. Vegans do not use beeswax as it is an animal product. In this recipe, I just use the natural firmness of mango butter for a fabulous lip balm that is vegan-friendly.

Another thing to love about this recipe is the sheer simplicity of it. Only 3 ingredients are required (2 if you want to skip the essential oil and make an unscented lip balm).

Mango butter is one of my favorite butters to use on my skin and lips. I love the silkiness of it, plus it really doesn't have an odor. Let explore more.

Why Use Mango Butter for Lip Balm?

Mango butter is a completely plant-based ingredient from pure mango and is extremely nourishing to the skin.

It has a near non-existent aroma making it a perfect alternative to shea butter and cocoa butter that have very pronounced scents. It allows essential oils to shine through beautifully.

Here are more benefits:

- Long-lasting all-natural lip moisturizer

- Light texture and non-greasy makes it suburb for lip balms

- Easily glides on and absorbs into the lips with ease

- Loaded with vitamins like A and E, essential fatty acids, and natural antioxidants

Why Use Jojoba Oil for Lip Balm?

This is an absolute favorite carrier oil for me, here are just a few reasons I chose it for this recipe:

- Lightweight, easy to absorb and never greasy

- Perfect for any skin type

- Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

- Acts as a humectant, meaning it seals your skin with a protective barrier to keep it from losing moisture and becoming irritated or dry

Essential Oils for Lip Balm

Whether you're dealing with dry, chapped lips from the cold winter weather or just need a little extra TLC for your lips, using essential oils for lip balm is a great way to give them the nourishment they need.

Here are some great essential oils to use in you homemade lip balm recipes:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Spearmint essential oil
  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Orange essential oil
  • Eucalyptus essential oil

Grapefruit Essential Oil for Lips

Grapefruit Essential Oil has a wonderful citrus aroma and that is the reason I chose it for this recipe. You can read more about the uses and benefits of grapefruit oil.

Note: According to Tisserand & Young, Grapefruit is a low risk phototoxic essential oil, recommended maximum dermal use level of 4% (that equals 24 drops per one ounce). If using over 4%, it's recommended that skin not be exposed to sunlight or sunbed rays for 12 hours. This recipe has 12 drops in a little over 1 oz of carrier oil.

Step 3: Add essential oil drops to butter and mix in well. You can use any oil that you prefer, I used Grapefruit essential oil in this recipe I made.

Step 4: Pour into jar containers, this recipe uses four 1/4 oz lip balm containers. Let solidify in the freeze for 1 hour. The freezer keeps the balm from becoming grainy. Place lids on once lip balm has set. (This recipe may be too soft for lipstick tubes, I suggest small jars or tins only)

To use, get a dab on a finger and rub on lips. Keep unused containers in the refrigerator. Use within 6 months or if ingredients used to make lip balm expire before then).
